Anyone in that state of mind is withheld from every useful pursuit, and feels it bothersome to do anything of importance, shying away with a kind of repulsion from whatever is useful, whether in civil or moral life, or in matters of faith and charity, whether an action or a thought. From these [obligations] the person is held back by those spirits, who at the same time slip in reviling thoughts against them, causing the person to want to get out of them.
