78. (II.) A society, smaller or larger, is the neighbor according to the good of its use. Every society in a kingdom is established according to uses, which are various. There are societies whose business it is to administer various civil affairs, which are manifold; various judicial affairs; various economical affairs; societies-such as consistories, academies, and schools-for various ecclesiastical purposes; and there are societies, which also are many, for the advancement of knowledge.
