That this signifies life such as the ancients had, is evident from the signification of "lying," as being life; for "to lie" here means to be buried with them, and as "being buried" denotes resurrection and regeneration, "lying with them" denotes life, because resurrection is into life, and in like manner regeneration; and from the signification of "fathers," as being those who were of the Ancient and Most Ancient Churches (see n. 6075), thus the ancients.
