17. [17.] The Dutch are interested not so much in money as in the conduct of business itself. The conduct of business itself is to them the end and their love, and is of first importance, while money is an intermediate end and is loved for the sake of conducting business, so as to be of secondary importance. People who are of this character are loved in heaven, where each is valued according to his useful service. Of a different sort are avaricious people-such as Jews-for whom money is of first importance, so as to be itself the end and their love, while the conduct of business is of secondary importance. Such people possess an avarice that is foul in the measure of their love for money alone.
