149. * CONCERNING THE TERROR OF THOSE WHO HAVE LED A PERVERSE LIFE It was observed that among spirits the instructed who have perverted their way are, more than others, exceedingly terrified and tremble at the judgment of truth, so that they immediately become despondent in mind; but this is not the case with others. The former, indeed, betake themselves to more humble supplications than others, nor do they know where to hide themselves. But still, as soon as they recede from their terror they return to their former animus and pride, and suppose themselves to be the only ones in the whole heaven, as I perceived today. 1747, Oct. 9, o.s. * For nos. 149-151, see after n. 205. For n. 152, see after n. 199. See also Special Preface, p. ix.
