2303. When a person's mental images are being sorted out by the Lord, they are joined with many different mental images conducive to happiness
It has been said earlier, as you may see [2211-20, 2295-8], that mental images are complex, and there are so many elements in a single one as to surpass human belief and comprehension. A single mental image coalesces out of such a multiplicity of numbers, and yet is sometimes so ugly that if projected before the eyes together with everything linked to it, or if a figure resembling it were to appear, the person or spirit would shudder at themselves-so that a devil could not be more hideously depicted. Nevertheless, people on earth and spirits love their own mental images of this kind, thinking them more lovely than anything in the universe. Therefore, in the other life these are sorted out by the Lord so as not to stick together and be so ugly. For since to be human is to think, and thought is a series of mental images, the person is such as is the series.
