2. GENESIS
So the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it; because on it he rested from all his work which God created when making it.
4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, on the day that Yehowah God made earth and heaven. 5 And no shrubs of the fields were yet on the earth, and no plants of the fields had yet sprung up; for Yehowah God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no man to till the ground. 6 So he caused a mist to ascend from the earth, and it watered the whole face of the ground. 7 Then Yehowah God formed the man with dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living creature. 8 And Yehowah God planted a garden in Eden in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And Yehowah God caused to spring up out of the ground every tree desirable to the sight and good for food, and the tree of life in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it divided and became four heads. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon, that which encompasses the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12 and the gold of that land is good; there is bdellium and the shoham stone. 13 And the name of the second river is the Gihon, that which encompasses the whole land of Cush. 14 And the name of the third river is the Hiddekel, that which goes eastwards to Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. 15 Then Yehowah God took the man, and placed him in the garden of Eden to till it and to tend it. 16 And Yehowah God commanded the man, and said, Of every tree in the garden you may indeed eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat; for on the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.
18 Then Yehowah God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make for him a helper suited to him. 19 And Yehowah God formed out of the ground every wild animal of the fields, and every bird of the heavens, and brought it to the man to see what he would call it; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 And the man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the heavens, and to every wild animal of the fields; but no helper was found suited to the man. 21 So Yehowah God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead of it; 22 and Yehowah God built a woman from the rib which he had taken from the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 And the man said,
This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; for this she shall be called Woman,* because she was taken out of Man.** * Heb 'ishshah ** Heb 'ish
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother, and cling to his wife; and they shall be one flesh. 25 And both the man and his wife were naked, and were not ashamed.
