25. GENESIS

And Abraham took another woman, whose name was Keturah. 2 And she bore to him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 3 And Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. 4 And the sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanokh, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the sons of Keturah. 5 But Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac; 6 and Abraham gave gifts to the sons of the concubines whom Abraham had; and while he was still alive he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastwards to the east country.

7 Now these are the days of the years of Abraham's life which he lived, a hundred and seventy-five years. 8 And Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, old and satisfied with life; and he was gathered to his people. 9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is towards Mamre, 10 the field which Abraham had purchased from the sons of Heth; there Abraham was buried with Sarah his wife. 11 And after the death of Abraham, God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac lived near Beer-lahai-roi.

12 Now these are the generations of Ishmael the son of Abraham, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's maidservant, bore to Abraham; 13 and these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by name in the order of their birth: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebaioth; and Kedar, Adheel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, in their settlements, and in their fortified places, twelve princes of their people. 17 And these are the years of Ishmael's life, a hundred and thirty-seven years; and he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people. 18 And they resided from Havilah as far as Shur, which is in front of Egypt as you come towards Assyria; he overcame all his brothers.

19 Now these are the generations of Isaac the son of Abraham: Abraham was the father of Isaac. 20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife. 21 And Isaac prayed to Yehowah on behalf of his wife, because she was childless; and Yehowah granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived. 22 And the sons struggled together within her, and she said, If it is so, why is this happening to me? And she went to enquire of Yehowah. 23 And Yehowah said to her,

Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples shall he separated from your belly;

and one of these people shall prevail over the other, and the elder shall serve the younger.

24 Then the time of her confinement came, and there were twins in her womb. 25 And the first came out red all over, like a hairy mantle; and they named him Esau. 26 And after that his brother came out, and his hand was holding on to Esau's heel; and they named him Jacob; and Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.* 27 And the boys grew. And Esau became a man skilled in hunting, a man of the fields; but Jacob was a man of integrity, living in tents. 28 And Isaac loved Esau, for the venison** that he had to eat; but Rebekah loved Jacob. * Or when he became their father ** lit game

29 And Jacob boiled soup; and Esau came in from the fields, and he was faint. 30 And Esau said to Jacob, Please give me some of the red soup, this red soup to eat, for I am faint; therefore he named him Edom.* 31 But Jacob said, Sell me, today, your birthright. 32 And Esau said, Look, I am going to die, so what is this birthright to me? 33 And Jacob said, Swear an oath to me today; and he swore it to him; and he sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave to Esau some bread and lentil soup; and he ate and drank, and got up and departed. And Esau despised the birthright. * That is Red
