11. GENESIS

Now the whole earth was of one language,* and they spoke with one voice. 2 And as they travelled away from the east, they found a valley in the land of Shinar; and they lived there. 3 Then they said to one another, Come, let us make bricks, and bake them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for clay. 4 And they said, Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens; and let us make a name for ourselves, in case we are scattered over the face of the whole earth. 5 But Yehowah came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of man were building. 6 And Yehowah said, See, they are one people, and they all have one language; and they begin to do this, and now nothing that they propose to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down, and there confound their language, so that no one may understand the language of his neighbour. 8 So Yehowah scattered them from there over the face of all the earth; and they ceased building the city. 9 Therefore it was named Babel, because there Yehowah confounded the language of all the earth; and from there Yehowah scattered them over the face of all the earth. * lit lip

These are the generations of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old when he became the father of Arpakshad, two years after the flood; 11 and Shem lived for five hundred years after he became the father of Arpakshad, and he had sons and daughters.

And Arpakshad lived for thirty-five years, and was the father of Shelah; 13 and Arpakshad lived for four hundred and three years after he became the father of Shelah, and he had sons and daughters.

And Shelah lived for thirty years, and was the father of Eber; 15 and Shelah lived for four hundred and three years after he became the father of Eber, and he had sons and daughters.

And Eber lived for thirty-four years, and was the father of Peleg; 17 and Eber lived for four hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Peleg, and he had sons and daughters.

And Peleg lived for thirty years, and was the father of Reu; 19 and Peleg lived for two hundred and nine years after he became the father of Reu, and he had sons and daughters.

And Reu lived for thirty-two years, and was the father of Serug; 21 and Reu lived for two hundred and seven years after he became the father of Serug, and he had sons and daughters.

And Serug lived for thirty years, and was the father of Nahor; 23 and Serug lived for two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor, and he had sons and daughters.

And Nahor lived for twenty-nine years, and was the father of Terah; 25 and Nahor lived for one hundred and nineteen years after he became the father of Terah, and he had sons and daughters.

And Terah lived for seventy years, and was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

Now these are the generations of Terah. Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran was the father of Lot. 28 And Haran died in the lifetime of Terah his father, in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans. 29 And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves; the name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milkah, the daughter of Haran, who was the father of Milkals and Iskah. 30 But Sarai was barren; she had no children. 31 And Terah took his son Abram, and Lot the son of Haran, his son's son, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram; and they set out together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came as far as Haran, and lived there. 32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.
