13. GENESIS

Abram went up out of Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, towards the Negeb. 2 Now Abram was very rich in cattle, silver, and gold. 3 And he went on his journey from the Negeb as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at first, between Bethel and Ai, 4 to the place where he had made the altar at the beginning; and there Abram called on the name of Yehowah. 5 And Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks and herds and tents. 6 And the land could not hold them, so that they might live together; for their substance was great, and they could not live together. 7 And there was a dispute between the herdsmen of Abram's cattle and the herdsmen of Lot's cattle. And the Canaanites and the Perizzites were then living in the land.

8 So Abram said to Lot, Let there be no dispute between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are men who are brothers. 9 Is not the whole land before you? Then separate yourself from me; if you go to the left, then I will go to the right; and if you go to the right, then I will go to the left. 10 And Lot raised his eyes and saw the entire Plain* of Jordan, all of which was well watered before Yehowah destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of Yehowah, like the land of Egypt towards Zoar. 11 So Lot chose for himself the entire Plain of Jordan; and Lot travelled from the east; and they were separated from each other. 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, and Lot lived in the cities of the Plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom. 13 But the men of Sodom were evil, and great sinners against Yehowah. * lit Circle

14 Then Yehowah said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, Raise your eyes now, and look from the place where you are, to the north, the south, the east, and the west; 15 for all the land that you see I will give to you and your descendants for ever. 16 And I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth, so that if a man can count the dust of the earth, your descendants also can be counted. 17 Arise, explore the land, the length and breadth of it; for I will give it to you. 18 And Abram moved his tent, and went to live among the terebinths of Mamre, which are at Hebron, and there he built an altar to Yehowah.
