14. GENESIS

Now in the days of Amraphel the king of Shinar, Arioch the king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and Tidal the king of Goiim, 2 these kings made war with Bera the king of Sodom, and with Birsha the king of Gomorrah, Shinab the king of Admah, and Shemeber the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, that is, Zoar. 3 A11 these were gathered together at the Valley of Siddim, which is the Salt Sea. 4 For twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled. 5 And in the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer came with the kings who were with him, and defeated the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim, 6 and the Horites in their Mount Seir, as far as El-paran which is in the desert. 7 And they returned, and came to En-mishpat, that is, to Kadesh, and defeated all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who lived in Hazazontamar. 8 And the king of Sodom went out with the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, that is, Zoar; and they made an assault on them in the Valley of Siddim, 9 on Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, Tidal the king of Goiim, Amraphel the king of Shinar, and Arioch the king of Ellasar: four kings against the five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of bitumen pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell there; and those who survived fled to the mountains. 11 Then they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their food, and departed. 12 And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, and his goods, for he was living in Sodom, and they departed.

13 And one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living among the terebinths of Mamre the Amorite, the brother of Eshkol and Aner, for these were allies of Abram. 14 And Abram heard that his brother had been taken captive; and he led out his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen men, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15 And he and his servants divided their forces against them in the night, and defeated them, and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is to the north of Damascus. 16 And he brought back all the goods, and he also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, and the women and the people as well.

17 Then after his return from defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh, which is the King's Valley. 18 And Melchizedek the king of Salem brought bread and wine; and he was a priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him, and said,

Blessed be Abram by God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth;

20 and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your adversaries into your hands.

And Abram gave him tithes of everything. 21 Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, Give me the people, and take the goods for yourself. 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have sworn to Yehowah, God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that I will not take even a shoe-lace or a sandal-thong that is yours, in case you should say, I have made Abram rich. 24 I will save nothing except what my young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me; let Aner, Eshkol, and Mamre take their share.
