DEUTERONOMY 5

Then Moses called to all Israel, and said to them, O Israel, hear the statutes and regulations which I speak in your ears today, so that you may learn them and take care to observe them. 2 Yehowah your God made a covenant with us at Horeb. 3 Yehowah made this covenant not with our fathers but with us, even us, all of us here who are alive today. 4 Yehowah spoke with you face to face on the mountain from the midst of the fire. 5 I stood between Yehowah and you at that time, to show you the word of Yehowah; for you were afraid because of the fire, and did not go on the mountain. And he said:

I am Yehowah your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the home of slavery.

You shall have no other gods before me. 8 You shall not make for yourself any carved image, any form which is in the heavens above or on the earth beneath or in the waters under the earth; 9 you shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I Yehowah your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the sons, even on the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, 10 and showing mercy to thousands who love me and keep my commandments.

You shall not take the name of Yehowah your God in vain; for Yehowah will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

Take care to sanctify the sabbath day, as Yehowah your God has commanded you. 13 For six days you shall labour and do all your work; 14 but the seventh day is a sabbath to Yehowah your God. On it you shall do no work, you, and your son and your daughter, your male and female slaves, your ox and your ass and your cattle, and the settler who is within your gates; so that your male and female slaves may rest as well as you. 15 And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and that Yehowah your God brought you out from there by a strong hand and an outstretched arm; therefore Yehowah your God commanded you to observe the sabbath day.

Honour your father and your mother, as Yehowah your God has commanded you, so that your days may be prolonged, and it may go well with you, in the land which Yehowah your God gives you.

You shall not commit murder.

And you shall not commit adultery.

And you shall not steal.

And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.

And you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, and you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, and his male and female slaves, his ox and his ass, or anything which is your neighbor's.

Yehowah spoke these words to all your assembly at the mountain from the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and then he finished speaking. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone, and gave them to me. 23 And when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain burned with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes, and your elders; 24 and you said, See, Yehowah our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice from the midst of the fire; today we have seen that God can speak with man, and man can still live. 25 And now, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of Yehowah our God any more, we shall die. 26 For who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire as we have, and has lived? 27 Go near, and hear all that Yehowah our God says; then tell us all that Yehowah our God has told you; and we will hear, and act. 28 And Yehowah heard the tone of your words when you spoke to me; and Yehowah said to me, I have heard the tone of this people's words which they have spoken to you; they have done well in what they have said. 29 O that there might be such a heart in them, to fear me and keep all my commandments always, so that it might go well with them and with their sons for ever! 30 Go, say to them, Return to your tents. 31 But you, stand here with me, and I will tell you all the commandments, statutes, and regulations which you shall teach them, so that they may observe them in the land which I give them to possess. 32 And you shall take care to do as Yehowah your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right or the left. 33 You shall walk in all the way which Yehowah your God has commanded you, so that you may live and it may go well with you, and you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess.
