DEUTERONOMY 6

Now these are the commandments, statutes, and regulations which Yehowah your God commanded to teach you, so that you might observe them in the land which you are crossing over to possess; 2 so that you might fear Yehowah your God, keeping all his statutes and commandments which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life; and so that your days may be prolonged. 3 And you shall hear, O Israel, and take care to observe them, so that it may go well with you, and you may increase mightily, as Yehowah the God of your fathers has promised you, in the land which flows with milk and honey.

4 Hear, O Israel: Yehowah our God is one Yehowah; 5 and you shall love Yehowah your God with all your heart and soul and might. 6 And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart; 7 and you shall impress them on your sons, and shall speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk in the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up. 8 And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 And you shall write them on the door-posts of your house and on your gates.

10 And when Yehowah your God has brought you into the land which he promised to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, giving you great and splendid cities which you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things which you did not fill, and cisterns hewn out which you did not hew, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant, and when you eat and are satisfied, 12 take care what you do, and do not forget Yehowah who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the home of slavery. 13 You shall fear Yehowah your God, and serve him, and swear by his name. 14 You shall not go after other gods, gods of the peoples who are round about you 15 (Yehowah your God in the midst of you is a jealous God), or else the anger of Yehowah your God will flare up against you and destroy you from the face of the ground.

16 You shall not tempt Yehowah your God, as you tempted him in Massah. 17 You shall diligently keep the commandments of Yehowah your God, and his testimonies and statutes which he has commanded you. 18 And you shall do what is right and good in the eyes of Yehowah, so that it may go well with you and you may go in and take possession of the good land which Yehowah promised to your fathers, 19 by driving out all your enemies before you, as Yehowah has spoken.

20 When your son asks you in time to come, and says, What is the meaning of the testimonies, statutes, and regulations which Yehowah our God has commanded you? 21 then you shall say to your son, We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt; and Yehowah brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand. 22 And before our eyes Yehowah performed signs and wonders, great and severe, on Egypt, on Pharaoh and all his house; 23 but he brought us out from there, so that he might bring us in and give us the land which he promised to our fathers. 24 And Yehowah commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear Yehowah our God, for our continual good, so that he might keep us alive, as at this day. 25 And righteousness shall be ours if we take care to observe the whole of this commandment before Yehowah our God, as he has commanded us.
