16. GENESIS

Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bore him no children; but she had a maidservant, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. 2 And Sarai said to Abram, Look how Yehowah has restrained me from bearing a child; go in now to my maidservant; it may be that I shall be built up from her. And Abram obeyed Sarai's voice. 3 And Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her maidservant, after Abram had lived in the land of Canaan for ten years, and she gave her to be a woman for Abram her husband. 4 And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, May my wrong be on you; I gave my maidservant for you to embrace; now she sees that she has conceived, and I am despised in her eyes; may Yehowah judge between me and you. 6 And Abram said to Sarai, See, your maidservant is in your hands; do to her what seems good in your eyes. Then Sarai humiliated her, so that she fled from her presence.

7 And the angel of Yehowah found her near a spring of water in the desert, near the spring on the road to Shur. 8 And he said, O Hagar, Sarai's maidservant, where have you come from, and where are you going? And she said, I am fleeing from the presence of Sarai my mistress. 9 Then the angel of Yehowah said to her, Return to your mistress, and put yourself in her hands. 10 And the angel of Yehowah said to her, I will multiply your descendants greatly, until they cannot be counted for multitude. 11 And the angel of Yehowah said to her, See, you have conceived, and you shall bear a son; and you shall name him Ishmael, because Yehowah has heard of your humiliation. 12 And he will be a wild-ass man; his hand will be against all, and the hands of all will be against him; and he will live in opposition to all his brothers. 13 Then she named Yehowah who was speaking to her, Thou art a God who sees me; for she said, Have I not also here seen after him who sees me? 14 Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi;* it can be seen between Kadesh and Bered. * That is The well of the living one, who sees me

15 And Hagar bore a son to Abram; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 And Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
