17. GENESIS

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, Yehowah appeared to Abram, and said to him, I am God Shaddai;* walk before me, and be perfect. 2 And I will set my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you without limit. 3 Then Abram fell on his face; and God spoke to him, and said, 4 See, my covenant is with you, and you shall become the father of a multitude of nations. 5 And no longer shall you be named Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. 6 And I will make you extremely fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. 7 And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you. 8 And I will give to you and your descendants after you the land where you settle, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. * That is God Almighty

9 And God said to Abraham, And you shall keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. 10 This is my covenant which you shall keep, between me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin; it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you. 12 And whoever among you is eight days old shall be circumcised, every male throughout your generations; both he who was born in the home, and he who was bought with silver from any foreigners, who is not of your descendants. 13 Whoever was born in your home or was bought with your silver must be circumcised; and my covenant shall be in your flesh as an everlasting covenant. 14 And any uncircumcised male person, one who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.

15 Then God said to Abraham, As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai, but her name shall be Sarah. 16 And I will bless her, and give you a son by her also; yes, I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her. 17 But Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, Can a child be born to one who is a hundred years old? Or can Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child? 18 And Abraham said to God, How I wish that Ishmael might live before thee! 19 But God said, Truly, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son; and you shall name him Isaac; and I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you; indeed, I have blessed him, and I will make him fruitful, and will multiply him without limit; he shall be the father of twelve princes, and I will make him into a great nation. 21 But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at the set time next year. 22 And when he had finished speaking with him, God went up from Abraham.

23 Then Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all who had been born in his home, and all who had been bought with his silver, every male among the people of Abraham's household; and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins on that very day, as God had told him. 24 And Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin; 25 and his son Ishmael was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26 On that very day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised. 27 And all the men of his household, born in the home or bought with silver from foreigners, were circumcised with him.
