DEUTERONOMY 13

If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you, and shows you a sign or a wonder, 2 and the sign or wonder of which he spoke to you comes to pass, and he says, Let us follow other gods which you have not known before, and let us serve them; 3 you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer of dreams; for Yehowah your God is testing you, to know if you love Yehowah your God with all your heart and soul. 4 You shall follow Yehowah your God and fear him, and you shall keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and cling to him. 5 And that prophet or dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has spoken to turn you against Yehowah your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the home of slavery, so as to thrust you out of. the way in which Yehowah your God commanded you to walk. So you shall purge this evil from your midst.

6 If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or daughter, or the wife whom you cherish, or your friend who is very close to you, entices you secretly, and says, Let us go and serve other gods-gods which you and your fathers have not known before, 7 the gods of the people who are round about you, near you or far from you, from one end of the earth even to the other- 8 you shall not agree with him or listen to him, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him or conceal him; 9 but you must kill him; your hand shall be the first on him to put him to death, and afterwards the hands of all the people. 10 And you shall stone him so that he dies, because he has sought to drive you away from Yehowah your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the home of slavery. 11 Then all Israel shall hear, and fear, and do no such wicked thing among you any more.

12 If you hear anybody in any of your cities which Yehowah your God has given you to live in saying, 13 Certain worthless fellows have gone out of your midst, and have drawn away the inhabitants of their city, by saying, Let us go and serve other gods which you have not known before; 14 then you shall ask, and inquire, and seek diligently; and if the thing is true and certain that this abhorrent thing has been done among you, 15 you must strike the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it completely, with all that is in it, including its cattle, with the edge of the sword. 16 And you shall gather all the spoil from it into the city centre, and shall burn the city with fire, and every single article of spoil in it, to Yehowah your God; and it shall remain a heap for ever, never being built again. 17 So nothing of the cursed thing shall stick to your hands; and Yehowah will turn from the heat of his anger, and show you mercy, and have compassion on you, and multiply you, as he promised your fathers, 18 when you attend to the voice of Yehowah your God, keeping all his commandments which I give you today, doing what is right in the eyes of Yehowah your God.
