20. GENESIS

Now Abraham set out from there towards the land of the Negeb, and lived between Kadesh and Shur; and he settled in Gerar. 2 And Abraham said of his wife Sarah, She is my sister; and Abimelech the king of Gerar sent and took Sarah. 3 And God came to Abimelech in a dream in the night, and said to him, See, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken; for she is married to a husband. 4 Now Abimelech had not come near her; and he said, Lord, wilt thou kill even a just nation? 5 Did he not say to me himself; She is my sister? And she, yes, she herself said, He is my brother. In the integrity of my heart and in the blamelessness of my hands I have done this. 6 And God said to him in the dream, Yes, I know that in the integrity of your heart you have done this, and it was I who withheld you from sinning against me; therefore I did not allow you to touch her. 7 And now restore the man's wife, for he is a prophet and will pray for you, and you shall live; but if you do not restore her, know that you will certainly die, you and all who are yours.

8 Then Abimelech got up early in the morning and called all his servants, and told them all these things; and the men were very much afraid. 9 And Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, so that you brought great sin on me and my kingdom? You have done to me what ought not to be done. 10 And Abimelech said to Abraham, What had you in view, in doing this thing? 11 Then Abraham said, Because I said, There is no fear of God in this place at all; and they will kill me on account of my wife. 12 And also in truth she is my sister, my father's daughter but not my mother's daughter; and she became my wife. 13 And when God caused me to depart from my father's house, I said to her, There is a kindness which you can do to me; at every place we come to, say of me, He is my brother. 14 Then Abimelech took flocks and herds, and male and female slaves, and gave them to Abraham, and restored Sarah his wife to him. 15 And Abimelech said, Look, my land is before you; live wherever it seems good in your eyes. 16 And to Sarah he said, See, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; this is your vindication in the eyes of all who are with you, and of everyone; and she was vindicated. 17 Then Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his female slaves; and they bore children. 18 For Yehowah had tightly closed every womb in Abimelech's household because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.
