21. GENESIS
And Yehowah visited Sarah as he had said, and Yehowah did to Sarah as he had spoken. 2 So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the set time, as God told him. 3 And Abraham named his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac. 4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. 5 And Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 And Sarah said, God has made laughter for me; all who hear of it will laugh with me. 7 And she said, Who would have said to Abraham, Sarah will nurse sons? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.
8 And the boy grew and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day when Isaac was weaned. 9 But Sarah saw that the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, was mocking. 10 So she said to Abraham, Get rid of this slave and her son; for the son of this slave shall not share the inheritance with my son, with Isaac. 11 And the matter seemed very wrong in the eyes of Abraham, because he was his son. 12 But God said to Abraham, Do not let it seem wrong in your eyes because of the lad, and because of your slave; in everything Sarah says to you, obey her voice; for your descendants shall be named through Isaac. 13 And I will also make the son of the slave into a nation, because he is your offspring.
14 So Abraham got up early in the morning, and took some bread and a flask of water, and gave them to Hagar, putting them on her shoulder, and gave her the boy, and sent her away; and she left and wandered in the desert of Beer-sheba. 15 And when the water from the flask was used up, she put the boy under one of the shrubs. 16 Then she went and sat by herself; not far from him, about a bowshot away; for she said, I cannot bear to see the boy die. And she sat not far from him, and raised her voice and wept. 17 But God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called Hagar from heaven, and said to her, What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the lad, where he is. 18 Get up, lift the lad up, and strengthen your hand through him, for I will make him into a great nation. 19 Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well containing water; and she went and filled the flask with water, and gave the lad a drink. 20 So God was with the lad, and he grew; and he lived in the desert, and became an accomplished archer. 21 And he lived in the desert of Paran; and his mother chose a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
22 Now at that time, Abimelech together with Pikhol the captain of his army spoke to Abraham, and said, God is with you in all that you do. 23 So now swear to me here by God that you will not lie to me, or to my children, or to my posterity; as I have shown kindness to you, you shall show kindness to me and to the land in which you have settled. 24 And Abraham said, Indeed I will swear.
25 But Abraham complained to Abimelech on account of a well of water which Abimelech's servants had seized. 26 Then Abimelech said, I do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me of it, nor have I heard about it until today. 27 So Abraham took flocks and herds, and gave them to Abimelech; and the two of them made a covenant. 28 And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock on one side. 29 Then Abimelech said to Abraham, What are these seven ewe lambs which you have set on one side? 30 And he said, You shall take the seven ewe lambs from my hand, so that there may be a witness for me that I dug this well. 31 Therefore he called that place Beer-sheba,* because there the two of them swore an oath. 32 So they made a covenant at Beer-sheba; and Abimelech rose up with Pikhol the captain of his army, and returned to the land of the Philistines. 33 And he planted a grove** in Beer-sheba, and there he called on the name of Yehowah, the God of Eternity. 34 And Abraham settled in the land of the Philistines for many days. * That is Well of the seven or Well of the oath ** Or tamarisk tree
