22. GENESIS
And after these events God tempted Abraham, and said to him, Abraham; and he said, Here I am. 2 And he said, Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah; and offer him there as a burnt-offering on one of the mountains which I will tell you of. 3 So Abraham got up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his lads with him, and his son Isaac; and he split the wood for the burnt-offering, and got up to go to the place which God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham raised his eyes, and saw the place from a distance. 5 Then Abraham said to his lads, Remain here with the ass, while I and the boy go further to worship, and then come back to you. 6 And Abraham took the wood for the burnt-offering, and laid it on his son Isaac; and he took the fire and the knife in his hands; and the two of them went on together. 7 Then Isaac spoke to his father Abraham, and said, My father; and he said, Here I am, my son. And he said, Here are the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for a burnt-offering? 8 And Abraham said, God will provide himself with the lamb for a burnt-offering, my son. And the two of them went on together.
9 And when they came to the place which God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. 11 Then the angel of Yehowah called to him from heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham; and he said, Here I am. 12 And he said, Do not lay your hands on the boy or do anything to him; because now I know that you fear God, for you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me. 13 And Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and saw a ram behind him, caught in a thicket by its horns; so Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it as a burnt-offering instead of his son. 14 And Abraham named that place Yehowah-yireh;* as it is said at this day, On a mountain Yehowah will provide. * That is Yehowah will provide
15 Then the angel of Yehowah called to Abraham from heaven a second time, 16 and said, By myself I have sworn (says Yehowah) that because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will certainly bless you, and multiply your descendants without number, like the stars of the heavens and the sand on the sea shore, so that your descendants may possess the gates of their enemies; 18 and in your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed; because you have obeyed my voice. l9 So Abraham returned to his lads, and they got up and went together to Beer-sheba; and Abraham lived at Beer-sheba.
20 Then after these things it was told Abraham, See, Milkah has also borne sons to your brother Nahor: 21 Uz his firstborn and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram, 22 and Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel. 23 And Bethuel was the father of Rebekah. These eight Milkah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother. 24 And also his concubine, whose name was Reumah, bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maakah.
