28. GENESIS

So Isaac called to Jacob and blessed him, and commanded him, and said to him, You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. 2 Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the home of Bethuel your mother's father; and take for yourself from there a wife from the daughters of Laban your mother's brother. 3 And God Shaddai will bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and you shall be a congregation of peoples; 4 and he will give you the blessing of Abraham, you and your descendants with you, so that you may possess the land in which you settle, which God gave to Abraham. 5 So Isaac sent Jacob away; and he went to Paddan-aram, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah the mother of Jacob and Esau.

6 And Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and had sent him away to Paddan-aram to take a wife for himself from there; and that when he had blessed him, he had commanded him, saying, You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan; 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother, and had gone to Paddan-aram. 8 And Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan were evil in the sight of his father Isaac; 9 and Esau went to Ishmael, and took for a wife, besides his other wives, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son, the sister of Nebaioth.

10 Now Jacob set out from Beer-sheha, and went towards Haran. 11 And he came to a certain place, and spent the night there, because the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place. 12 And he dreamed, and saw a stairway set up on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it, 13 and Yehowah was standing above it. And he said, I am Yehowah, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac; I will give to you and your descendants the land on which you lie. 14 And your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread around to the west, the east, the north, and the south; and in you and your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15 And see, I am with you, and will guard you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you. 16 Then Jacob woke up from his sleep, and said, Surely Yehowah is in this place, and I did not know it. 17 And he was frightened, and said, How awesome is this place! This is nothing less than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.

18 And Jacob got up early in the morning, and took the stone which he had put under his head, and set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it. 19 And he named that place Bethel,* though Luz was the name of the city at first. 20 And Jacob made a vow, and said, If God will be with me, and guard me on this road on which I am going, and will give me food to eat and clothing to wear, 21 and I come back in peace to my father's home, then Yehowah shall be my God; 22 and this stone which I have set up as a pillar shall be God's house; and of all that thou wilt give me I will freely give a tenth to thee. * That is House of God
