29. GENESIS

And Jacob lifted up his feet, and went to the land of the sons of the east. 2 And he looked and saw a well in the fields, and also there were three droves of a flock lying nearby; for out of that well they watered the droves; and the stone on the mouth of the well was large. 3 And when all the droves were gathered to it, they would roll the stone from the mouth of the well, and water the flock, and put the stone back in its place over the mouth of the well. 4 And Jacob said to them, My brothers, where are you from? And they said, We are from Haran. 5 And he said to them, Do you know Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We do. 6 Then he said to them, Does all go well with him? And they said, Indeed it does; and see, his daughter Rachel is coming with the flock. 7 And he said, Look, it is still early in the day; it is not time for the cattle to be gathered together; water the flock, and go and pasture them. 8 And they said, We cannot do so until all the droves are gathered together; then they roll the stone back from the mouth of the well, and we water the flock.

9 And while he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with the flock which belonged to her father, for she was a shepherdess. 10 And when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the flock of Laban his mother's brother, Jacob came near, and rolled the stone back from the mouth of the well, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother. 11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel, and raised his voice and wept. 12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son; and she ran and told her father. 13 And when Laban heard the news about Jacob his sister's son, he ran to meet him, and embraced him and kissed him, and brought him into his house. And when he told Laban all these things, 14 Laban said to him, Surely, you are my bone and my flesh. And he remained with him for a full month.

15 And Laban said to Jacob, Because you are my brother, ought you to serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be? 16 Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 And Leah's eyesight was poor; but Rachel had a lovely figure and was very beautiful. 18 And Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, I will serve you for seven years for Rachel your younger daughter. 19 And Laban said, It is better that I should give her to you than to another man; remain with me. 20 And Jacob served for Rachel for seven years; and they were in his eyes like that many days, because of his love for her.

21 Then Jacob said to Laban, Give me my wife, for my time is completed, and let me come in to her. 22 And Laban called together all the men of the place, and made a feast. 23 And then in the evening he took his daughter Leah, and brought her to him; and he went in to her. 24 And Laban gave her his slave Zilpah to be a maidservant to his daughter Leah. 25 And in the morning he saw that it was Leah; and he said to Laban, What have you done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served with you? Then why have you defrauded me? 26 And Laban said, It is not done that way among us, to give the younger before the firstborn. 27 Complete a week for this one, and we will give you the other one also, in return for serving me for another seven years. 28 And Jacob did so, and completed the week for her; and he gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife. 29 And Laban gave his slave Bilhah to his daughter Rachel, to be a maidservant to her. 30 And he went in also to Rachel, and also he loved Rachel more than Leah; and he served with him for another seven years.

31 Now Yehowah saw that Leah was unloved, so he opened her womb; but Rachel was barren. 32 And Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she named him Reuben;* for she said, Yehowah has seen my affliction; for now my husband will love me. 33 And she conceived again, and gave birth to a son; and she said, Yehowah has heard that I am unloved, for he has given me this child also; and therefore she named him Simeon.** 34 And she conceived again, and bore a son; and she said, Now this time my husband will cling to me, because I have borne him three Sons; therefore she named him Levi.*** 35 And she conceived again, and bore a son; and she said, This time I will confess Yehowah; therefore she named him Judah,**** and she ceased to bear children. * Probably See, a son related by sound to the Hebrew of has seen my affliction ** That is Hearing *** That is Clinging to **** That is Confession or Praise
