30. GENESIS

Now Rachel saw that she was not bearing any children to Jacob; and Rachel envied her sister, and said to Jacob, Give me sons, or else I shall die. 2 And Jacob's anger flared up against Rachel; and he said, Am I in God's place, who has withheld the fruit of the womb from you? 3 And she said, Here is my maidservant Bilhah; go in to her; and she shall be delivered on my knees, and I, too, shall be built up from her. 4 And she gave him her maidservant Bilhah for a woman, and Jacob went in to her. 5 And Bilhah conceived, and bore Jacob a son. 6 Then Rachel said, God has judged me, and has also heard my voice, and has given me a son; therefore she named him Dan.* 7 And Rachel's maidservant Bilhah conceived again, and bore Jacob a second son. 8 And Rachel said, With the wrestling of God have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed; and she named him Naphtali.** * That is He judged ** That is Wrestling

9 And when Leah saw that she had ceased to bear children, she took her maidservant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob for a woman. 10 And Leah's maidservant Zilpah bore Jacob a son. 11 Then Leah said, A troop comes; and she named him Gad.* 12 And Leah's maidservant Zilpah bore a second son to Jacob. 13 And Leah said, I am happy, for women shall call me happy; and she named him Asher.** * That is Troop; the word may also mean Fortune ** That is Happy

14 Now Reuben went out in the time of the wheat harvest, and found some love-plants in the fields, and brought them to his mother Leah. And Rachel said to Leah, Give me, please, some of your son's love-plants. 15 But she said to her, Is it a little thing that you have taken my husband? And would you also take my son's love-plants? And Rachel said, Then he shall lie with you tonight in return for your son s love-plants. 16 And Jacob came from the fields in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, You must come in to me; for I have hired you with my son's love-plants. So he lay with her that night. 17 And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 And Leah said, God has given me my reward, because I gave my maidservant to my husband; and she named him Issachar.* 19 Then Leah conceived again, and bore a sixth son to Jacob. 20 And Leah said, God has endowed me with a good dowry; now my husband will live with me, because I have borne him six sons; and she named him Zebulun** 21 And afterwards she gave birth to a daughter, and named her Dinah. 22 Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her, and opened her womb. 23 And she conceived, and gave birth to a son; and she said, God has removed my reproach. 24 And she named him Joseph,*** and said, May Yehowah add to me another son. * That is Reward ** That is Living-place *** That is He adds

25 Now when Rachel had borne Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, Let me go away, so that I may go to my own place and my country. 26 Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served you, so that I may go; for you know the service which I have given you. 27 Then Laban said to him, Would that I had found favour in your eyes! I realize that Yehowah has blessed me because of you. 28 And he said, Name your wages to me, and I will give them. 29 And he said to him, You know how I have served you, and what your cattle have become through me. 30 For you had few before I came, and they have increased to a multitude; and Yehowah has blessed you since my coming. And now, when shall I work for myself; for my own household? 31 And he said, What shall I give you? Then Jacob said, You shall not give me anything. If you will do this for me, I will again pasture your flock and guard it; 32 let me pass through all your flock today, removing from it all the speckled and spotted animals, and all the black ones among the lambs, and the spotted and speckled among the she-goats; and they shall be my wages. 33 And my trustworthiness shall answer for me at a later day, when you come to reckon up my wages from you; whatever is not speckled and spotted among the she-goats, and black among the lambs, is stolen if I have it. 34 And Laban said, So let it be as you say. 35 And on that day he removed the he-goats that were striped and spotted, and all the she-goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had white in it, and all the black ones among the lambs; and he gave them into the hands of his sons. 36 And he put a three days' journey between himself and Jacob; and Jacob pastured the rest of Laban's flock.

37 Then Jacob took for himself some rods of fresh poplar, hazel, and plane, and peeled white strips on them, exposing the white which was on the rods. 38 And he set the rods which he had peeled in the runnels at the watering-places to which the flock came to drink, to be in front of the flock; and they were in heat when they came to drink. 39 And the flock was in heat in front of the rods, and the flock produced striped, speckled, and spotted young ones. 40 And Jacob separated the lambs, and set the faces of the flock towards the striped and all the black ones in Laban's flock; and he set his own droves apart, and did not put them with Laban's flock. 41 And whenever the flock was strongly in heat, Jacob put the rods before the eyes of the flock in the runnels, so that they might be in heat among the rods; 42 and he did not put them in for the feeble of the flock. So the feeble were Laban's, and the strong were Jacob's. 43 And the man spread around immensely, and he had many flocks, male and female slaves, camels, and asses.
