32. GENESIS

Then Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. 2 And when he saw them, Jacob said, This is the company of God; and he named that place Mahanaim.* * That is Two companies

3 Then Jacob sent messengers on ahead to his brother Esau, to the land of Seir, the fields of Edom. 4 And he commanded them, and said, This is what you shall say to my lord Esau: Thus says your servant Jacob, I settled with Laban, and stayed there until now. 5 And I have oxen and asses, sheep, and male and female slaves; and I have sent to tell my lord so that I may find favour in your eyes.

6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, and said, We came to your brother Esau, and he also is coming to meet you with four hundred men. 7 And Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies; 8 and he said, If Esau comes on one company and destroys it, then the company which is left will escape.

9 And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yehowah who said to me, Return to your land and to your birthplace so that I may deal well with you; 10 I am not worthy of all the mercies and faithfulness which thou hast shown to thy servant; for I crossed this Jordan with only my staff, and now I have become two companies. 11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hands of my brother, from the hands of Esau; for I am afraid of him, in case he comes and destroys me, mothers and children alike. 12 And thou hast said, I will certainly deal well with you, and I will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted for its multitude.

13 And he lodged there that night, and took from what was near at hand a present for his brother Esau: 14 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 15 thirty milking camels and their young, forty cows and ten young bulls, twenty she-asses and ten colts. 16 And he gave them into the hands of his servants, each drove by itself; and said to his servants, Go on ahead of me, and put a space between each drove. 17 And he commanded the leading one, and said, When my brother Esau meets you, and asks you, To whom do you belong? Where are you going? And whose are these in front of you? 18 then you shall say, They belong to your servant Jacob; it is a present sent to my lord Esau; and see, he also is behind us. 19 And he commanded the second one also, and the third, and all who followed the droves, and said, In this way you must speak to Esau when you find him. 20 And you must say also, See, your servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and after that I will meet him face to face; perhaps he will accept me. 21 And the present went ahead of him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp.

22 And he rose up during the night, and took his two wives, and his two slaves, and his eleven sons, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 And he took them and made them cross the river, along with all that he had. 24 And Jacob remained alone; and a man wrestled with him there until daybreak. 25 And the man saw that he did not prevail against him, and he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 And the man said, Let me go, for the day is breaking. And he said, I will not let you go unless you bless me. 27 And he said to him, What is your name? And he said, Jacob. 28 And he said, Your name shall not he Jacob any longer, but Israel;* for as a prince you have contended with God and with men, and have prevailed. 29 And Jacob asked and said, Tell me, please, your name. And he said, Why have you asked my name? And he blessed him there. 30 And Jacob named the place Peniel,** and said, For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. 31 And the sun rose on him as he passed over Penuel, and he limped on his thigh. 32 Therefore to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh, on the sinew of the hip. * That is Contender as a prince with God ** That is The face of God
