33. GENESIS
And Jacob raised his eyes and saw then that Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. And he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two handmaids. 2 And he put the handmaids and their children at the front, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph last. 3 And he himself went on ahead of them, and bowed down to the ground seven times until he had come near to his brother.
4 And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. 5 And he raised his eyes and saw the women and children, and said, Who are these with you? And he said, The children whom God has kindly given to your servant. 6 And the handmaids came near with their children, and bowed down.
7 And Leah also came near with her children, and bowed down; and afterwards Joseph and Rachel came near and bowed down. 8 And he said, What is all this company of yours which I met? And he said, To find favour in the eyes of my lord. 9 And Esau said, I have much, my brother; let what is yours be yours. 10 But Jacob said, No, if I have now found favour in your eyes, then please take this present from my hand; for I have seen your face because of it, as though seeing the face of God, and you have accepted me. 11 Please take n1y blessing which is brought to you, because God has been kind to me, and because I have everything. And he urged him, and he took it.
12 Then Esau said, Let us journey on and go, and I will go beside you. 13 And he said to him, My lord knows that the children are young, and the flocks and herds with me are with young; and if the men overdrive them one day, then all the flocks will die. 14 Please let my lord go on ahead of his servant, and I will come on slowly, according to the pace of the cattle that are before me, and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.
15 And Esau said, Then let me place with you some of the people also are with me. And he said, Why so? Let me find favour in the eyes of my lord. 16 And Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. 17 And Jacob travelled to Succoth, and built a house for himself; and made pens for his cattle; therefore he named the place Succoth.* * That is Pens
18 And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan-aram; and he camped before the city. 19 And he bought the portion of the fields where he had spread his tent from the hands of the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for a hundred pieces of money.* 20 And he set up an altar there and called it El-Elohe-Israel.** * That is a hundred qesitahs ** That is God the God of Israel
