34. GENESIS

And Dinah, Leah's daughter, whom she bore to Jacob, went out to meet the daughters of the land. 2 And Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her; and he took her and lay with her, violating her. 3 And his heart* clung to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and beloved the young woman, and spoke comfortingly to her. 4 And Shechem spoke to Hamor his father, and said, Get me this girl for a wife. 5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled his daughter Dinah; and his sons were with his cattle in the fields, so Jacob kept silent until they came. 6 And Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him. 7 And Jacob's sons came from the fields when they heard; and the men were indignant and very angry, because he had acted shamefully in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter, since such a thing ought not to be done. * Heb nephesh

8 But Hamor spoke with them, and said, The heart of my son Shechem longs for your daughter. I beg you, give her to him for a wife. 9 And enter into marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves. 10 And you shall live with us, and the land shall be before you; live in it, and trade where you like, and have possessions in it. 11 And Shechem said to her father and her brothers, Let me find favour in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you demand of me. 12 Increase my obligations for the marriage-price and gift, and I will give whatever you tell me; but give me the young woman for a wife.

13 And Jacob's sons answered Shechem and Hamor his father treacherously when they spoke, because he had defiled their sister Dinah; 14 and they said to them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to a man who has a foreskin, for that would be a reproach to us. 15 Only on this condition will we consent to you: if you become like we are, and every male among you is circumcised, 16 then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters for ourselves, and we will live with you and become one people. 17 But if you will not listen to us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and go.

18 And their words were good in the sight of Hamor and Shechem, Hamor's son. 19 And the young man did not delay to do the thing, for he had delight in Jacob's daughter. Now he was respected above all his father's household. 20 And Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gateway of their city, and spoke to the men of their city, and said, 21 These men are at peace with us; therefore let them live in the land and trade where they like; for see how the land extends widely before them; let us take their daughters as wives for ourselves, and let us give our daughters to them. 22 Only on this condition will the men consent to us, to live with us and become one people: that every male among us must be circumcised, as they are circumcised. 23 Will not their acquisition* and what they have purchased, and all their cattle, be ours? Only let us agree with them, and they will live with us. 24 And they listened to Hamor and his son Shechem, every man who went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, every man who went out of the gate of his city. * Or cattle

25 And then on the third day, when they were sore, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and killed every male. 26 And they killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the point of the sword, and they took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and departed. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister. 28 They took their flocks, their herds, and their asses, and whatever was in the city, and whatever was in the fields; 29 and all their wealth, and all their children and their women, and all that was in their houses, they captured and plundered. 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, You have made trouble for me by putting me in bad odour with the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and I am few in number, and if they gather together against me and attack me, I shall be destroyed, both I and my household. 31 But they said, Should he treat our sister as a prostitute?
