39. GENESIS
Now Joseph had been carried down to Egypt, and Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officers, the chief guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the hands of the Ishmaelites who had carried him down there. 2 And Yehowah was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the household of his master the Egyptian. 3 And his master saw that Yehowah was with him, and that Yehowah made everything he did to prosper in his hands. 4 And Joseph found favour in his sight, and ministered to him; and he made him the overseer of his house, and he put everything he had into his hands. 5 And so from the time he made him the overseer of his house and of everything he had, Yehowah blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake, and the blessing of Yehowah was on everything he had in the house and in the fields. 6 And he left everything he had in Joseph's hands; and he had no concern for anything beyond the food that he ate.
And Joseph was a fine figure of a man, and handsome. 7 And after a time his master's wife raised her eyes to Joseph and said, Lie with me. 8 But he refused; and he said to his master's wife, See now, my master trusts me completely in his house, and all that he has is put into my hands; 9 he himself is hardly greater in this house than me; nor has he kept back anything from me, but you, because you are his wife; so how could I do this great evil, and sin against God? 10 And although she continued to speak to Joseph every day, he would not listen to her, to lie with her and be with her. 11 Then one day, when he went into the house to do his business, and none of the men of the household were there in the house, 12 she caught him by his cloak, and said, Lie with me. And he left his cloak in her hands, and fled and went out. 13 And when she saw that he had left his cloak in her hands, and had fled away, 14 she called to the men of her household, and said to them, See, he has brought a Hebrew to us to make sport of us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I screamed out; 15 and when he heard me screaming and shouting, he left his cloak beside me, and fled and went out. 16 Then she kept his cloak beside her, until his master came into his house. 17 And she spoke to him in these words, and said, The Hebrew slave whom you have brought came to me, to make sport of me; 18 and when I screamed and shouted, he left his cloak beside me, and fled away.
19 And when his master heard his wife's words, when she said to him, This is how your slave treated me, his anger flared up. 20 Then Joseph's master took him, and put him in the prison-house, a place where the king's prisoners were held; and he stayed there in the prison-house. 21 But Yehowah was with Joseph, and showed mercy to him, and gave him favour in the sight of the governor of the prison-house. 22 And the governor of the prison-house put into Joseph's hands all the prisoners who were in the prison-house; and he was responsible for all that they did there. 23 No official in the prison-house checked anything in his care; for Yehowah was with him, and Yehowah caused everything he did to prosper.
