40. GENESIS

Now after a while, the king of Egypt's cup-bearer and baker sinned against their master the king of Egypt. 2 And Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cup-bearer and the chief baker. 3 And he put them in custody in the chief guard's house, in the prison-house, the place where Joseph was confined. 4 Then the chief guard put Joseph in charge of them and he ministered to them, and they were in custody for some time. 5 And they each had a dream-the king of Egypt's cup-bearer and baker, who were confined in the prison-house-each man had his dream on the same night, each man with a meaning to his dream. 6 And when Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were troubled. 7 And he enquired of Pharaoh's officers who were with him in custody in the house of his master, and said, Why are your faces so sad today? 8 And they said to him, We have had a dream, and there is no one to interpret it. And Joseph said to them, Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell it to me, please.

9 Then the chief cup-bearer told Joseph his dream, and said to him, In my dream, there was a vine before me; 10 and on this vine there were three shoots, and as it budded, its blossoms broke open and its clusters ripened into grapes; 11 and Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and pressed them out into Pharaoh's cup, and put the cup into Pharaoh's hand. 12 Then Joseph said to him, This is the interpretation of it: the three shoots are three days; 13 after three days Pharaoh will lift up your head, and restore you to your office, and you shall put Pharaoh's cup into his hand just as you did when you were his cup-bearer. 14 But do not forget me when it is well with you; and show kindness to me, please, by making mention of me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house. 15 For I have been stolen from the land of the Hebrews, and here also I have not done anything for which they should put me in the pit.

16 And when the chief baker saw that he had interpreted favourably, he said to Joseph, I also was dreaming, and see, there were three baskets, full of holes, on my head; 17 and in the top basket there were baked foods of all kinds for Pharaoh, and the birds were eating them from the basket on my head. 18 And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation of it: the three baskets are three days; 19 after three days Pharaoh will lift up your head off you, and will hang you on a tree, and the birds will eat the flesh off you.

20 And on the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, he made a feast for all his servants, and he lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants. 21 Then he restored the chief cup-bearer to his office of cup-bearer, and he put the cup into Pharaoh's hands, 22 but he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them. i3However, the chief cup-bearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.
