45. GENESIS

Then Joseph could not restrain himself before all those who stood near him; and he cried, Send everyone away from me. And no one stayed with him while Joseph made himself known to his brothers. 2 And he wept aloud; and the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it. 3 Then Joseph said to his brothers, I am Joseph. Is my father still alive? But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed at his presence.

4 So Joseph said to his brothers, Come near to me, please. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph, your brother whom you sold into Egypt. 5 And now, do not be troubled or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. 6 For the famine has been throughout the land for the past two years; and there are still five years when there will be no ploughing and harvesting. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve a remnant for you on the earth, and to keep you alive for a great deliverance. 8 So now it was not you who sent me here, but God; and he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler of all the land of Egypt. 9 Make haste, and go up to my father, and say to him, Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not delay. 10 And you shall live in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near to me, you and your sons and your sons' sons, and your flocks and herds, and all that you have. 11 And there I will sustain you, for there are still five years of famine; otherwise you will be impoverished, you and your household and all that you have. 12 And now, your eyes and the eyes of my brother Benjamin can see that it is my mouth that speaks to you. 13 And you must tell my father about all my glory in Egypt, and all that you have seen; and you must make haste to bring my father here. 14 Then he fell on the neck of his brother Benjamin, and wept; and Benjamin wept on his neck. 15 And he kissed all his brothers, and wept on them; and after that, his brothers talked with him.

16 And the news was heard in Pharaoh's house, and they said, Joseph's brothers have come. And it was good in Pharaoh's eyes and the eyes of his servants. 17 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, Tell your brothers to do this: Load your animals and go back to the land of Canaan. 18 And bring your father and your households, and come to me; and I will give you the best part of the land of Egypt, and you shall eat the best of the land. 19 And then command them,* Do this: take from the land of Egypt some wagons for your children and your wives, and bring your father, and come. 20 And do not think of your belongings, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours. * As LXX and Vg; MT has you are commanded

21 And the sons of Israel did so, and Joseph gave them wagons, as Pharaoh had commanded, and he gave them provisions for the journey. 22 To every one of them he gave changes of clothing, but he gave Benjamin three hundred pieces of silver and five changes of clothing. 23 And for his father he sent these things: ten asses loaded with the good things of Egypt, and ten she-asses loaded with grain and bread and food for his father on the journey. 24 Then he sent his brothers away, and they departed; and he said to them, Do not quarrel on the way. 25 So they went up from Egypt, and came to the land of Canaan, to their father Jacob. 26 And they told him, and said, Joseph is still alive, and he is ruler over all the land of Egypt. But his heart failed him, for he did not believe them. 27 And they told him all Joseph's words which he had spoken to them; and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, their father Jacob's spirits revived. 28 And Israel said, It is enough; my son Joseph is still alive; I will go and see him before I die.
