Then Joseph came and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and my brothers, and their flocks and herds, and all that they possess, have come from the land of Canaan, and now they are in the land of Goshen. 2 Then from his brothers he took five men, and presented them to Pharaoh. 3 And Pharaoh said to his brothers, What is your occupation? And they said to Pharaoh, Your servants are shepherds, as our fathers were. 4 And they said to Pharaoh, We have come to settle in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants' flocks, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan; and now, please let your servants live in the land of Goshen. 5 And Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, and said, Your father and your brothers have come to you. 6 The land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. Let them live in the land of Goshen; and if you know that there are men of ability among them, then set them as cattle-masters over what is mine.

7 And Joseph brought his father Jacob and presented him to Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. 8 And Pharaoh said to Jacob, How many are the days of the years of your life? 9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, The days of the years during which I have lived are a hundred and thirty years. Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not amounted to the days of the years of the lives of my fathers in the days during which they lived. 10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from Pharaoh's presence. 11 So Joseph settled his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best part of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded. 12 And Joseph sustained his father, his brothers, and all his father's household with food, according to the number of their dependants.* * lit mouth of their children

13 Now there was no food in all the land, for the famine was very severe; and the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine. 14 And Joseph gathered in all the silver that was found in the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan for the corn that they were buying, and Joseph brought the silver into Pharaoh's house. 15 And when the silver came to an end in the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph, and said, Allow us bread, for why should we die in your presence because the silver has gone? 16 And Joseph said, Bring your cattle, and I will give you food in exchange for your cattle if the silver has gone. 17 So they brought their cattle to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for the horses, cattle of the flock, cattle of the herd, and asses; and he provided them with food in exchange for all their cattle during that year. 18 And when that year was ended, they came to him in the second year, and said to him, We will not hide from my lord that, since the silver is at an end and my lord has the cattle of the herds, nothing is left before my lord but our bodies and our land. 19 Why should we die before your eyes, we and our land? Buy us and our land for food, and we and our land will be Pharaoh's servants; and give us seed so that we may live and not die, and so that the land may not be desolate.

20 So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh, for every Egyptian sold his field, because the famine pressed upon them; and the land became Pharaoh's. 21 And as for the people, he transferred them to the cities, from one end of the country of Egypt to the other. 22 But he did not buy the land of the priests; for the priests had a fixed due from Pharaoh, and they lived on their due which Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their land. 23 Then Joseph said to the people, See, today I have bought you and your land for Pharaoh; here is seed for you, so that you may sow the land. 24 And when the harvests come, you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four-fifths shall be your own, as seed for the fields, and as food for you and for those in your households, and as food for your children. 25 And they said, You have saved our lives; let us find favour in the eyes of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants. 26 And Joseph established it for a permanent statute concerning the land in Egypt, that a fifth was to be Pharaoh's. Only the land of the priests, theirs alone, did not become Pharaoh's.

27 So Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen, and had a possession in it; and they were fruitful, and multiplied greatly. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt for seventeen years, until Jacob had reached the age of a hundred and forty-seven.

29 And when the time approached for Israel to die, he called his son Joseph, and said to him, If now I have found favour in your eyes, I beg you to put your hand under my thigh, and deal with me mercifully and truly; please do not bury me in Egypt. 30 For I want to lie with my fathers; so you shall carry me up from Egypt, and bury me in their sepulchre. And he said, I will do exactly as you say. 31 And he said, Swear it to me; and he swore it to him. And Israel sank back on the head of his bed.
