EXODUS 17
Then all the congregation of the sons of Israel set out from the desert of Sin, in their order, at the command of Yehowah; and they camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 And the people contended with Moses, and said, Give us water so that we may drink. And Moses said to them, Why do you contend with me? Why do you tempt Yehowah? 3 And the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses, and said, Why have you brought us out of Egypt, to make us and our sons and our cattle die of thirst? 4 Then Moses cried to Yehowah, and said, What shall I do for this people? A little more, and they will stone me. 5 And Yehowah said to Moses, Go ahead of the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river, and go. 6 See, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you must strike the rock, and water will come out of it so that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he named the place Massah* and Meribah,** because of the contention of the sons of Israel, and because of their tempting Yehowah by saying, Is Yehowah in our midst, or not? * That is Tempting ** That is Contending
8 Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. 9 And Moses said to Joshua, Choose men for us, and go out and fight against Amalek; tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand. 10 So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of the hill. 11 Now whenever Moses lifted up his hand, Israel prevailed; but whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12 But the hands of Moses became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, and Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side and one on the other; so his hands were steady until sunset. 13 And Joshua overcame Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
14 And Yehowah said to Moses, Write a record of this on a scroll, and repeat in Joshua's ears that I will utterly wipe out the memory of Amalek from under the heavens. 15 Then Moses built an altar, and named it, Yehowah is my Banner. 16 And he said, From generation to generation because Amalek's hand is against the throne of Yah, Yehowah will make war against Amalek.
