EXODUS 16

And they set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel came to the desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had gone out of the land of Egypt. 2 And the whole congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the desert; 3 and the sons of Israel said to them, If only we had died by the hand of Yehowah in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate food to the full; for you have brought us out into this desert, to make this whole assembly die of hunger.

4 Then Yehowah said to Moses, See, I will cause it to rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out every day and gather a day's portion, in order that I may test them, whether or not they are walking in my law. 5 And then on the sixth day they shall prepare what they bring in, but it shall be twice as much as they gather daily. 6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the sons of Israel, At evening you shall know that it was Yehowah who brought you out of the land of Egypt; 7 and in the morning you shall see the glory of Yehowah, because he hears your grumblings against Yehowah; and what are we, that you grumble against us? 8 And Moses said, When Yehowah gives you flesh to eat in the evening, and in the morning bread to the full, because Yehowah hears your grumblings which you make against him-then what are we? Your grumblings are not against us, but against Yehowah.

9 Then Moses said to Aaron, Say to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, Come near before Yehowal,, for he has heard your grumblings. 10 And as Aaron was speaking to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, they looked back towards the desert, and there the glory of Yehowah appeared in the cloud. 11 And Yehowah spoke to Moses, and said, 12 I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel. Speak to them, and say, When night has fallen you will eat flesh, and in the morning you will be satisfied with bread; then you shall know that I am Yehowah your God.

13 And in the evening quails came up, and covered the camp; and in the morning dew lay all round the camp. 14 And when the dew that lay on the ground went up, then on the face of the desert there was a small round thing, as small as hoar frost on the earth. 15 And when the sons of Israel saw it, each man said to his brother, What is it?* For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, It is the bread which Yehowah has given you to eat. 16 This is what Yehowah has commanded: Gather it, every man as much as he can eat, an omer a head, according to the number of your persons; each of you shall gather it for those in his tent. 17 And the sons of Israel did so; and they gathered it, some more and some less. 18 And they measured it with an omer; he who had gathered much had nothing over, and he who had gathered little had no shortage; every man had gathered what he could eat. 19 And Moses said to them, Let no one leave any of it till the morning. 20 But they did not listen to Moses, and some men left part of it till the morning; then it bred worms and became putrid; and Moses was angry with them. 21 So they gathered it each morning, every one as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted. * Heb man-hu from which is derived the word manna

22 And on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each person; and all the princes of the congregation came and told Moses. 23 And he said to them, This is what Yehowah has said: Tomorrow will be a day of rest, a holy sabbath to Yehowah; bake what you must bake, and boil what you must boil; and whatever is over, put aside for yourselves to be kept until the morning. 24 So they put it aside until the morning, as Moses commanded; and it did not become putrid, and there were no worms in it. 25 Then Moses said, Eat it today, for today is a sabbath to Yehowah; today you will not find anything in the fields. 26 On six days you shall gather it; but on the seventh day, the sabbath, there will be none. 27 Yet on the seventh day, some of the people went out to gather it, and did not find any. 28 Then Yehowah said to Moses, How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? 29 See! Because Yehowah has given you the sabbath, therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days; let every man remain where he is, let no man leave his place on the seventh day. 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

31 Now the house of Israel named it manna;* and it was like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like a wafer made with honey. 32 And Moses said, This is what Yehowah commands: Take an omer of it to be kept for your descendants, so that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the desert, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt. 33 And Moses said to Aaron, Take a jar, and put a full omer of manna in it, and store it up before Yehowah, to be preserved for your descendants. 34 As Yehowah commanded Moses, so Aaron stored it up before the Testimony, to be preserved. 35 And the sons of Israel ate the manna for forty years, until they came to a habitable land; they ate the manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. 36 (Now an omer is a tenth of an ephah.) * Heb man
